Methodology

How we rank providers

What goes into the order and scores you see on The Top 10 Experts comparison pages.

Every comparison page on The Top 10 Experts lists providers in an order and, where shown, with a score out of 10. This page explains what those mean so you can weigh them properly.

What we look at

  • Product terms: the factors listed under "What to compare" on each page, such as coverage limits, APR, fees, caps and contract terms.
  • Availability: whether the provider serves your state or ZIP code and fits the answers you gave.
  • Customer experience: public complaint data, customer reviews and how easy the provider is to get a quote from.
  • Commercial factors: The Top 10 Experts is paid by many listed providers. Compensation and how often visitors choose a provider can influence its position and score.

What the scores mean

ScoreLabel
9.5–10Exceptional
9.0–9.4Excellent
8.5–8.9Very good
8.0–8.4Good

Scores are our overall assessment for a typical shopper. They are not a guarantee of price, approval or service, and the best provider for you depends on your situation.

Customer ratings

Where shown, the customer rating is the company's TrustScore on Trustpilot, out of 5, with the number of reviews behind it and the month we checked it. It is not our own score.

We display a Trustpilot rating only when the company's TrustScore is 4.0 or higher and is based on at least 25 reviews. When a listing shows no rating, the company either scores below 4.0 on Trustpilot or has too few reviews there. You can check any company's current rating on Trustpilot directly.

Trustpilot scores depend heavily on whether a company invites its customers to leave reviews. Large companies that don't ask for reviews often have low scores from a smaller number of unhappy customers, so a missing rating is not by itself a judgment of a company's products.

"Best for" labels

Labels such as "Best for bundling" point to a specific strength. They describe one reason a provider may suit you, not an overall ranking.

How often we update

Comparison pages show the month they were last reviewed. Provider terms change often, so always confirm current details with the provider before you buy.
