Before you choose

What to compare

Use these points to compare any credit card provider, whether or not it appears on The Top 10 Experts.

APR

Ongoing and intro APR

The ongoing APR applies once any intro period ends. If you carry a balance, it matters more than any reward.

Rewards rate

How rewards are earned

Flat-rate cards pay the same on everything. Category cards pay more in rotating or fixed categories and less elsewhere.

Annual fee

Whether the fee pays for itself

Add up the credits and rewards you will realistically use. If they do not beat the fee, a no-fee card wins.

BT fee

Balance transfer cost

Most transfers carry a one-time fee. Compare it with the interest you would save during the 0% window.

Common questions

Will comparing cards hurt my credit score?

No. Browsing offers does not affect your score. A hard inquiry only happens when you submit an application with an issuer.

Should I pick rewards or a low APR?

If you pay in full every month, rewards matter most. If you carry a balance, the interest rate will cost more than any rewards earn.

How many cards should I have?

There is no right number. What matters is paying on time and keeping balances low relative to your limits.
