What to check before you sign up
Whichever credit card provider you choose, compare these points:
- Ongoing and intro APR. The ongoing APR applies once any intro period ends. If you carry a balance, it matters more than any reward.
- How rewards are earned. Flat-rate cards pay the same on everything. Category cards pay more in rotating or fixed categories and less elsewhere.
- Whether the fee pays for itself. Add up the credits and rewards you will realistically use. If they do not beat the fee, a no-fee card wins.
- Balance transfer cost. Most transfers carry a one-time fee. Compare it with the interest you would save during the 0% window.
