What to compare before you choose
- Who handles your case. Look for enrolled agents, CPAs or tax attorneys authorized to represent you before the IRS.
- Flat fee or staged. Get the fee structure in writing, including what happens if the outcome is not what you hoped.
- Plans and settlements. Common outcomes include installment agreements, penalty abatement and, for some, an offer in compromise.
- Guarantees to avoid. No firm can guarantee a specific settlement amount. Be wary of anyone who does.
