What to check before you sign up
Whichever auto insurance provider you choose, compare these points:
- Liability limits. Shown as three numbers, such as 100/300/100: per-person injury, per-accident injury and property damage, in thousands.
- Your share of a claim. A higher collision or comprehensive deductible lowers the premium, but you pay more out of pocket after a claim.
- Bundles and driver discounts. Multi-policy, safe-driver, good-student and telematics discounts can change the ranking a lot.
- Claims experience. Price matters, but so does how a carrier handles claims. Check complaint data from your state insurance department.
