What to check before you sign up
Whichever life insurance provider you choose, compare these points:
- Term vs. permanent. Term covers a set period at a lower cost. Whole and universal life last for life and build cash value.
- How much coverage. A common starting point is enough to replace income for the years your family would need it, plus debts.
- Medical exam or no-exam. No-exam policies are faster but may cost more or cap coverage amounts.
- Carrier strength. Check the carrier's financial strength rating from agencies such as AM Best.
